In 1831 he won the status of Pueblo de Mercado, and in 1895 he obtained the city. For 117 years it was the capital of Ialomiţa, from 1716 to 1833.
The city is 60 km from Bucharest (the capital), Ploiesti, Buzau and Slobozia.
